Hair pieces have a long and humorous history in most cultures. In many media, the wigs are a common topic or theme of jokes and sarcasms. Sometimes these jokes would revolve around the fact that how inefficient these hair pieces were in concealing the bald patches of the wearer. In most cases, the wearer became the butt of all jokes as he would not himself be aware of  the inefficiencies of his hair piece. The comic almanac had many digs the hair pieces worn by bald men. It would depict strong winds blowing off a man’s wig-a joke that became common in times to come. In the 20th century, the hair piece became a butt of jokes in almost every media. These included cartoons, films, television, radio, etc. But nowadays, it is the celebrity clientele that has increased the sale of hair pieces.

The use of wigs or hair pieces grew in the US in the 1800s. A shift in values had occurred regarding the notion that aging occurred with time. Men wished to look young and started wearing hair pieces. The wish to grow young was so great that men preferred to tell their age to be 39 instead of 40! There was a mass hysteria about growing young. The census is a proof of this statement. In the modern times, hair pieces were used widely and in the 1950s it had a clientele of 15 million people! These hair pieces were usually promoted by a company calles Max Factor. The hair pieces were so magnificently made that it made all the bald patches invisible. The pieces also looked very real and lifelike. Such was the amount of effort put into its manufacturing.

If we go down in history, we shall see that monarch Julius Caesar also wore hair pieces. The monarch was utterly frustrated and dejected with his baldness. He had even shaved off his head to try out a bald look. But it did not work out and the monarch had to resort to wearing a hair piece. This is visible in many historical references like his pictures where he is shown wearing a wreath and his baldness is clearly visible. Roman men were also known to have painted their bald heads in order to cover the bald patches. The painted heads would give an impression of locks of hair. However, these methods are no longer used! The use of hair pieces grew in the United States of America in the year 1800. Men wanted to look younger and in the process resorted to wearing hair pieces.

Hair pieces are sometimes also called toupees. This name originated from a French word. It means top or tuft in French. In earlier times, rulers and monarchs would resort to hair pieces to cover their baldness. This is true for Julius Caesar. Thus the hair piece gradually gained popularity. Hair pieces have been in use since a long time and thus their exact history is practically untraceable. But we do know that rulers and monarchs were pivotal in popularizing the use of these false hair coverings. The desire to have a head full of hair is the same with everybody. This is true more in the case of males due to the genetic structures. Males have a greater tendency to lose hair and this further adds to the woes. Thus for them, a hair piece is probably the perfect solution.

Most hair pieces are supposed to cover small bald patches. However, large ones are also in use. Television, film and theatre actors also use these wigs for dramatic effect. Hair pieces are extremely popular among beauty conscious people and they definitely do not wish to show their bald scalps to the world. Many women wear hair pieces as extensions to cover up their patches or to add length to their short hair. Some people think it is useless to wear hair pieces. But in certain cultures, the bias against baldness is very strong. This is especially true for the western countries where there is a very strong bias against baldness. Thus people are far more conscious in the west. So obviously the use of hair pieces is more in the west than in the east.

Hair piece is usually the name given to wigs, toupees or any kind of false hair that is used for covering baldness. Sometimes these hair pieces are also worn for ornamentation and the use in that case is not simply restricted to baldness. These are usually linked to male wearers and differ in length. In fact these hair pieces can be customized to suit our needs. There has always been a lot of hue and cry about baldness. Thus a lot of people want to resort to artificial methods like wigs. This is definitely an effective method of covering bald patches. It is harmless and can cover our bald patches effectively and also look natural at the same time. Also, as compared to other medical methods or treatments, hair pieces have a greater level of acceptance in the society.
